Implement and Enforce Existing Law to Protect Owners

Press Statement By Michael Kong:

The Ministry of Local Government and Housing must take steps to ensure that the Strata Management Ordinance 2019 is enforced in the immediate near future.

This Strata Management Ordinance 2019 has been passed by the Sarawak State Assembly as early as 04.11.2019. Subsequently, it obtained assent on 28.11.2019 and was then published in the Government Gazette on 12.12.2019.

It has been more than 2 years since it was passed and yet this law has yet to be enforced. The whole purpose of such a law is to protect the homeowners, particularly those of a strata-titled project.

Throughout Sarawak, we now see an increase in the number of strata-titled projects. As at 31.10. 2019, it was announced that there were 280 projects comprising 18,323 strata titles. In Kuching alone, we have thousands of properties still pending issuance of Strata Title. This would mean that at this point in time, all these owners are unable to participate in the management of these strata-titled projects.

Any further delay in the enforcement of the Strata Management Ordinance 2019 will adversely affect the owners of these properties. I, therefore, urge Sim Kui Hian as the Minister of Local Government and Housing to quickly implement and enforce the law for the benefit and protection of these owners.
