Press Statement By Michael Kong:

Recently, DAP was informed about the uneven road surface and water ponding at Jalan Lapangan Terbang, opposite Kuching Sentral Mall. One responsible citizen took the liberty to inform MBKS on the issue and within two (2) days, MBKS replied to inform that the road maintenance was undertaken by Public Works Department and that the matter had already been referred to the Public Works Department for their further action.

It has been more than a month since the complain and no action has been taken by the authorities. To get a better perspective of the issue, DAP Stampin Parliamentary Team visited the actual location after a heavy downpour. The water ponding together with the uneven road surface causes a nuisance to road users and may also lead to traffic accidents.

The Public Works Department ought to look into the matter urgently. We have been seeing the authorities fixing roads at a tremendous scale lately (most likely due to the impending state elections). If time and effort can be spent on other roads within Kuching, then there is no excuse to not fix this portion of the road as well.

Although the particular road falls within the jurisdiction of the Public Works Department, MBKS should also not attempt to wash its hands clean by using jurisdictional limits. This is the typical bureaucracy that the public are sick and tired of. The authorities have to learn to stop passing the buck around but instead address the elephant in the room! Since the road also falls within MBKS’s jurisdiction, MBKS should also proactively help to seek Public Work Department’s assistance to have the matter resolved expeditiously. Therefore, I urge MBKS to actively work hand-in-hand with the Public Work Department to resolve this long outstanding issue.
