Press Statement by Alan Ling:

DAP Miri will continue to provide assistance and support to Covid-19 frontliners despite its limited resources as an opposition party, Senator Alan Ling said yesterday.

Ling, who is also Pakatan Harapan (PH) Sarawak and DAP Sarawak secretary, said various efforts had been made to assist the frontliners in appreciation of their services and sacrifices in the fight against Covid-19.

As such, some 250 face masks sponsored by Ling have been distributed to about 50 food delivery riders here yesterday.

According to Ling, many food delivery riders who are exposed to higher risk of Covid-19 infection have found the face masks to be either costly or hard to find in the market.

Upon learning about their plight, DAP Miri subsequently organised a two-hour drive through at Bintang Megamall and McDonald’s Petronas Station to give away face masks to the riders. Each rider also receives a bottle of drinking water, and a loaf of bread courtesy of Lions Club of Miri Host.

“This is a show of our gratitude to the food delivery riders who constantly deliver foods to us throughout the Movement Control Order (MCO) period.

“We (DAP) despite limited resources as opposition party, will continue to source for the supply of face masks to be given out to the frontliners, including food delivery riders and with sufficient supply we hope to be able to carry out the same effort in the coming weeks,” the DAP Piasau branch chairman said.

During the drive through, DAP Miri also took the opportunity to greet and thank the riders for their services rendered to many households staying afar and near and getting foods delivered under hot sun or rainy days.

“I hope these face masks can help them to further prevent the spread of the virus .

“So far, I have personally donated 5,000 face masks to the frontliners, besides the food rations prepared by DAP Miri for the needy families in and around Miri in the past three weeks.”

Ling disclosed that DAP Miri food aid team headed by him and DAP Miri youth chief Peter Hee have been working tirelessly to prepare, coordinate and going all out to assist as much as they can within their limited fund and resources.

“It is urged that the state government be aggressive in helping out the needy families through the Social Welfare Department as the budget has just been announced for each constituency,” he added.

Ling’s special assistant Lawrence Low, personal assistant Adriana David, and secretary Siti Zubaidah were present alongside DAP Long Lama chairman Marcus Hugo, Lions Club of Miri Host president John Ling and Hee during the drive through distribution.
