Violet Yong urged MBKS to clean up drains immediately in prevention of Dengue Outbreak

In view of the recent rise of Dengue outbreaks, DAP Pending Assemblywoman YB Violet Yong urged Kuching South City Council (MBKS) to take immediate action to clean up the drains within the commercial shop lots areas of Jalan Ang Cheng Ho Road and behind Hock Lee Centre, as the areas have been identified and confirmed as Dengue hotspots.

Yong were told by the public that MBKS has not carried out routine cleanliness operations in the areas resulting the clogged drains become the breeding grounds of the Aedes Mosquitoes. Therefore, the public are very concerned that there will be more dengue outbreak should MBKS not giving immediate attention to this major health issue.

She said, the Sarawak Health Department Office had placed many “Prevention against Dengue” awareness banners at various spots to alarm the public.

According to the statistics of Ministry of Health, the dengue cases in Sarawak have increased to 762 from January to June, with which Kuching being the highest among all with a record of 264 cases.

“In view of the severity of dengue cases, it is important to ensure the environmental hygiene. Therefore, the public should be more vigilant by taking precautionary measures, and preventing water catchment areas from turning into breeding grounds for Aedes Mosquitoes.” she said.

She reminded the public to always keep the environment clean and clear up all stagnant water catchment found within the surrounding premises.

“Should anyone experience bodily discomfort, or found to have signs and symptoms of dengue fever, they should seek immediate medical attention” she cautioned.

YB Yong has also called upon the Sarawak Health Department to organise more Dengue awareness campaigns to increase awareness among the public.
