Media Statement by YB Violet Yong:
The ongoing repair works for an underground pipe leakage along Jalan Permat in Pending, near the Pos Malaysia office, have led to the closure of two lanes, causing severe traffic congestion during peak hours. I urge the Kuching Water Board to act immediately and resolve the issue without further delay.
The leakage problem was reported to Kuching Water Board two weeks before the Hari Raya break after receiving complaints from the public. However, I was informed that Kuching Water Board could only begin the repair works after the Raya holidays.
Even till today, the repairs are still not complete and the source of the pipe leak has yet to be found.
The slow response and lack of urgency by the Kuching Water Board have caused great inconvenience to road users, who are stuck in daily traffic jams because of this issue.
It is totally unacceptable for Kuching Water Board to take such long time to identify the leak. Does the Kuching Water Board not have any proper leak detection equipment? If they do, why has it been so difficult to find the source of problem and carry out the necessary repairs?
Meanwhile, I request Kuching Water Board to direct the relevant party to temporarily patch up the damaged section of the road so to ease the traffic flow.
As of now, a three-lane road has now been reduced to just one lane open for traffic.
What’s more frustrating is the lack of any timeline to fully resolved the leakage issue.
