Press statement by Michael Kong:

Chinese New Year is a festival that is very dear to the Chinese community. This special occasion is also celebrated all around the world by people from all walks of life; regardless of race, ethnicity or religion. In a multi-cultural society like Malaysia, we all learn to appreciate and embrace each other’s cultures. In doing so, Malaysians have over the past decades created a bond amongst themselves that cannot be broken by zealots. Many have tried to so and have continued to fail miserably.

It is unfortunate that from time to time, we hear statements from some individuals which are utterly insensitive to the people of other races. This is not something new and is most likely to continue for many more years to come. However, it is important to learn from this episode to stand up for each other in all adversities and to embrace the cultural difference. Malaysia is a country which belongs to every Malay, Chinese, Indian, Iban, Kadazan, Orang Asli, and all those who were born in Malaysia.

From this, we should also be even more grateful that most Malaysians are understanding towards their fellow countrymen who comes from different backgrounds. Racists and extremists have no place in this country. After over 58 years of building this country together, we deserve to be able to live in peace and harmony without any threat to one another’s beliefs.
