Kuching: SK Kenyalang will soon see much-needed upgrades following a RM50,000 allocation from the Ministry of Education, announced during a recent visit by Deputy Minister Wong Kah Woh.

The funding comes as a response to the deteriorating condition of the school, which, despite being located in the heart of the city, has seen minimal refurbishment over the decades.

The 50-year-old building suffers from termite damage, leaking roofs, and uneven flooring – all of which pose safety risks to students and staff.

Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong, who initiated the visit, welcomed the allocation and praised Wong’s quick response.

“I truly appreciate Deputy Minister Wong’s willingness to come on the ground and act quickly. His commitment to addressing SK Kenyalang’s problems is a breath of fresh air for our school community,” said Yong.

The funds will be disbursed through the Sarawak Education Department to carry out the necessary repair works.

During the visit last week, Deputy Minister Wong was accompanied by officers from the Sarawak Education Department, then toured the school grounds and engaged with teachers and Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) members to better understand the school’s challenges.

Yong, an alumna of SK Kenyalang, highlighted the school’s ongoing struggles with funding.

“As a government school, SK Kenyalang has long depended on government allocations. However, due to limited resources and increasing student numbers, the annual government funding has always been insufficient.

“School expenditures are rising every year, and in some cases, the schools are running deficits. Since they only have a PTA, they lack other means to raise additional funds for school operations,” she said.

She also took the opportunity to recognise the contributions of Bandar Kuching MP Dr. Kelvin Yii for his consistent support, noting that his contributions through the parliament constituency development funds have helped improve the school’s infrastructure in recent years.
