Kuching: SMK Sungai Tapang has received a double allocation totalling RM150,000 from the Ministry of Education and the Stampin parliamentary constituency to upgrade school facilities and support digital learning initiatives.

During a visit to the school on Tuesday, accompanied by the Stampin Member of Parliament Chong Chieng Jen, Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh announced the first RM50,000 special allocation from the ministry for essential infrastructure upgrades. The funds will be used for restroom repairs, painting, electrical systems, and roofing improvements.

The second allocation came in response to the school’s Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG) request for smart TVs in classrooms.

While Wong clarified that ministry funds cannot be used to purchase equipment like TVs or computers, Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen stepped in with a commitment of RM100,000 from his constituency allocation to help the school acquire eight smart TVs for senior classrooms.

The announcement of the two separate allocations: RM50,000 for infrastructure and RM100,000 for digital tools, was met with warm applause from all present.

Meanwhile, Wong praised the school’s achievements in the 2024 SPM Chinese Language paper, where more than 50% of candidates scored A+, A, or A-, following a briefing with the principal and teaching staff.

He also noted that the school is one of the national secondary schools with the highest number of candidates taking Chinese in the SPM, reflecting strong student interest and commitment to the language.

Wong further highlighted the school’s progress in digital education, noting that many teachers had received certifications through Microsoft’s education training programs.

“The ministry recognises the efforts of schools like SMK Sungai Tapang, especially in delivering quality education and embracing digital teaching methods,” Wong said.

The dual financial support underscores growing investment in basic infrastructure and digital education tools, reflecting ministry and parliamentary efforts to strengthen education quality in Sarawak.
