Kuching: DAP Sarawak is providing free legal support to SJK Chung Hua Sejijak to facilitate the updating of the school’s land ownership records, in line with ongoing efforts to support mother tongue education.

DAP Sarawak Chairman, Chong Chieng Jen, said a delegation from the school’s board of management paid a courtesy visit to him to seek legal advice and assistance on the procedures for updating the registered landowner’s name.

He explained that the school was formerly known as “Kwong Hua School”, a name dating back to the British colonial era and in use since around 1939.

“Although the institution has since been renamed SJK Chung Hua Sejijak, the land title remains registered under its former name.

“Any amendment to the registered landowner’s name must comply with regulations set by the Sarawak Land and Survey Department, including formal legal procedures to update ownership records,” he said.

Chong added that, with the school board’s authorisation, he will undertake the necessary legal procedures in accordance with the department’s requirements and ensure the process is carried out smoothly at no cost to the school.

“This reflects DAP Sarawak’s longstanding commitment to community service. We hope to ease the administrative and legal burden faced by schools so they can focus on providing quality education,” he said.

He emphasised that the development of Chinese education in Malaysia has always relied on strong community support, and commended generations of board members for their dedication to sustaining the school, including contributions made even before Malaysia’s formation.

Chong reaffirmed that DAP Sarawak will continue to support initiatives that strengthen and preserve mother tongue education.

Since the formation of the Unity Government in 2022, Chong, who is also Stampin MP, said his service centre has consistently assisted the school, along with other Chinese and national schools in the Stampin constituency, in securing funding to improve facilities and the learning environment.

“In 2024, for instance, RM81,000 was allocated to install smart televisions in six classrooms, significantly enhancing teaching tools and overall education quality,” he noted.

He added that annual allocations are also provided to support both internal and external school activities, including co-curricular programmes and participation in local sporting events.

“Beyond financial assistance, we are now also offering free legal services to facilitate the renaming of the school land from ‘Kwong Hua School’ to ‘SJK Chung Hua Sejijak’, thereby formalising its identity and laying a stronger foundation for its future development,” he said.
