Kuching: The introduction of a Centralised Ticketing System (CTS) at Kuching Sentral Bus Terminal is expected to modernise ticket sales and improve overall efficiency at the terminal.

According to the Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board (LPKP) Sarawak Chairman Michael Kong Feng Nian, the system will provide greater convenience to passengers by allowing them to purchase tickets for various express bus operators through a single integrated platform.

“The introduction of the CTS is a positive step towards modernising the ticketing system at Kuching Sentral. It will provide greater convenience to passengers while also allowing bus operators the option to operate with fewer physical counters should they choose to do so,” he said.

He added that the move could potentially reduce overhead costs associated with counter rentals and manpower, while improving operational efficiency within the terminal.

LPKP Sarawak recently held a meeting with representatives from Permodalan ASSAR Sdn Bhd, the owner of the terminal, together with Sentral Solution Sdn Bhd, the appointed terminal operator.

During the meeting, the management briefed LPKP Sarawak on their operational responsibilities and plans to implement the new ticketing system.

In addition to discussing the CTS initiative, LPKP Sarawak also highlighted several recently implemented policies regarding the operation of express buses.

One of the key policies is the prohibition on transporting cargo in the passenger cabin of express buses. All goods and belongings must be properly stored in the designated cargo compartment to ensure passenger safety and comfort.

The terminal operator was also reminded that express bus companies are now required to provide mandatory discounted fares to senior citizens, persons with disabilities (OKU), and students.

With the implementation of the CTS, the system must be configured to automatically offer these groups the appropriate discounted fares when purchasing tickets.

Kong also raised concerns regarding the poor air-conditioning conditions at Kuching Sentral, noting that the terminal can become extremely warm and uncomfortable during peak travel periods when passenger traffic is high.

He urged management to repair and improve the existing air-conditioning system and suggested temporary measures, such as mobile air coolers, to improve ventilation while more permanent solutions are implemented.

LPKP Sarawak said it looks forward to continued collaboration with the terminal owner and operator to enhance the efficiency, safety and comfort of public transportation services for the people.

“Strengthening coordination among stakeholders remains key to ensuring facilities such as Kuching Sentral continue to serve the public effectively,” Kong said.
