Press Statement by YB Kelvin Yii:

We paid a visit to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) to visit a 26 year old patient that was involved in a car accident recently that had caused her to suffer different injuries which has caused her to be paraplegic( paralysis of lower limbs) and suffer from other complications especially due to an injury to her spine.

What was concerning was that she was about 32 weeks pregnant with her first child at time of accident and due to the impact, it not just risk her own life, but also the life of her unborn child. However we are grateful that not only the patient is now safe after the required surgery, but her baby in her womb is also safe under the monitoring of her dedicated doctors.

I was alerted of her condition and the financial needs of the family especially to purchased the required medical equipment for their treatment and recovery, thus I donated a special lightweight detachable wheelchair and a commode chair for her on top of some financial contributions to help her through the whole process.

I received a message from the patient’s in laws on my social media informing me how the patient who graduated as a Electrical Engineer is a very cheerful, kind and active person who is often involved in mountain climbing and even other sports before the accident. She and her husband were looking forward to celebrate their first year wedding anniversary at the end of the month on top of expecting the birth of their first child soon.

However due to the injury, there will be a lot of adjustments that needs to be done to her lifestyle including the responsibility of raising her child. It may be a long journey of recovery ahead, but I am glad she is in good spirits and she has a team of dedicated doctors, nurses, physios and also family members that are standing with her supporting her through it all.

Our office will also continue to monitor their needs and the different needs of the public whether in the hospital or outside. We will try to do our best to meet the needs of our community as well as to build a caring community here in Kuching.
