Sibu: Sibu MP Oscar Ling Chai Yew has pledged immediate and ongoing support for nine families affected by a devastating fire at the Rumah Panjang Gamang, Jalan Penasu, which displaced 38 residents.
Reacting swiftly after the incident was reported on social media, Oscar Ling and his service team rushed to the scene to express concern and assess the situation firsthand.
According to Oscar Ling, his priority is to ensure the victims receive the necessary assistance and support.
“My team and I visited the fire victims on 17 June 2025. Many of them lost everything. They are now staying at the temporary shelter at a nearby school’s court,” he said.
To provide immediate relief, Oscar Ling personally arranged the delivery of four big standing fans to help ease the heat at the temporary shelter. His service centre is also working closely with local authorities and welfare agencies to coordinate aid.
Meanwhile, Oscar Ling said victims were advised to prepare official documentation, including fire reports and proof of homeownership, to expedite disaster relief applications.
“We are now waiting for full reports from the police and fire and rescue department before proceeding with official aid allocations,” he added.
The Sibu MP extended gratitude to first responders from the Fire and Rescue Department (BOMBA), Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Civil Defence Force (APM), the Welfare Department, the Malaysian Red Crescent Society, and concerned citizens for their swift assistance.
“My service centre will do everything possible to ensure these families are not left behind. We are committed to helping them rebuild their lives,” Oscar Ling affirmed.
On 16 June 2025, a nine-door longhouse was almost destroyed in a fire. A spokesperson from the Operations Centre of the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (JBPM) Sarawak stated that they received an emergency call regarding the incident at 6:56 PM before deploying a team from the Sungai Merah Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) to the scene.
