No More Delay! Be Sincere in Push For Sarawak’s Rights!

Press Statement By Michael Kong:

I cannot help but to question how sincere is GPS in fighting for the rights of Sarawakians?

As the ruling state government for 58 years, GPS had never truly cared for the rights of Sarawak. GPS was the one who signed off our rights to our own oil in exchange for a 5% royalty. Similarly, it was GPS’ Members of Parliament that voted in favour of the Territorial Sea Act in 2012 that cuts Sarawak’s sea limit from 12 nautical miles to three nautical miles.

The current cry for more autonomy and Sarawak’s rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 is no more than a political narrative to ensure GPS’ survival. It is no coincidence that GPS only rebranded itself from BN Sarawak after the downfall of the UMNO led BN. It was also only after the growth of dissenting voices calling for a referendum that GPS started to look into the grievances of the people.

Despite being voted out during GE14, GPS somehow managed to find its way back to power through devious scheming with traitors and parties like UMNO and PAS. With all that, GPS is now in the position to implement changes to the Federal Constitution so that it properly reflect Sarawak as a founding sovereign state of this nation.

It is deeply regretted that after much fanfare, we now hear that the proposed constitutional amendments will be postponed. Why do we need the AGC to only be ‘consulted’ now? Was the AGC never consulted during the drafting of the proposed amendments? If so, then who were the drafters of the amendments if it was not by the AGC?

All these questions raises doubts as to the purpose of the portponement. We have seen how GPS rejected PH’s constitutional amendment for Article 1(2) on the guise that the words ‘pursuant to Malaysia Agreement 1963’ was missing yet now Wan Junaidi has proposed the same amendment to Article 1(2) that PH had pushed for in 2019.

The people of Sarawak has had enough. Bring us back our rights which we have lost and give us the due recognition without further delay.
