Michael Kong: MBKS must explain why infrastructure issues persist despite surplus

Michael Kong Feng Nian says MBKS can no longer cite a lack of funds as an excuse after financial statements revealed a budget surplus, urging the council to prioritise infrastructure improvements and public services in Kuching South.

Kuching: Based on the recently disclosed financial statements, it is clear that MBKS is operating with a budget surplus. In light of this revelation, the long-standing excuse repeatedly used by Wee Hong Seng that MBKS lacks sufficient funds to carry out projects can no longer be justified.

For years, whenever issues involving poor infrastructure or upgrading works were raised, the common response from MBKS has been that there is insufficient funding available. At the same time, Wee Hong Seng has persistently pushed the responsibility onto the opposition by challenging us to seek funding from the Federal Government, despite the fact that local councils in Sarawak enjoy a significant degree of autonomy and possess their own financial resources.

Now that the financial statements show that MBKS has a surplus, serious questions must be asked.

If MBKS has the funds available, then why are so many basic infrastructure issues throughout the city still unresolved? Why are residents still forced to endure poor drainage systems, damaged backlanes, flash floods, clogged earth drains, deteriorating public facilities, and delayed upgrading works?

The revelation of a budget surplus also raises concerns regarding priorities and planning within MBKS. The public deserves transparency and accountability regarding how these funds are being allocated and why many urgently needed projects continue to face delays or inaction despite the apparent availability of funds.

MBKS must therefore stop relying on excuses and start taking greater responsibility in delivering meaningful improvements for the people.

The available funds should be utilised wisely and efficiently to improve the quality of life and basic infrastructure within Kuching South, rather than leaving residents to continuously suffer from unresolved problems.
