Kuching: It is commendable that the Mayor has finally addressed the issue of the AED at Stutong Market by ensuring it was returned to its designated box.
When DAP first raised this matter, it was done solely in the interest of public safety – to ensure that the AED, after use, is promptly accessible for the next emergency.
However, the facts cannot be overlooked. More than ten days had passed since the AED was used, yet MBKS took no action to return it until the issue was publicly highlighted.
Such a delay is deeply troubling, especially when every second counts in a life-or-death situation.
What is even more disappointing is that, instead of acknowledging this lapse and focusing on rectifying it, the Mayor chose to dismiss those raising concerns as merely making “noise.”
Raising legitimate concerns about public safety is not political posturing—it is a civic duty. Remarks that trivialise genuine issues risk discouraging public participation and undermining efforts to improve city services.
The Mayor must remember that his foremost responsibility is to serve the people of Kuching, not to politicise every issue or deflect from administrative shortcomings.
His recent commentary regarding the Pending state seat has already caused public unease, prompting even his own party president to step in and clarify.
Public safety should never be treated lightly. The Mayor must prioritise improving service delivery, ensuring accountability within MBKS, and responding promptly to issues that directly affect the well-being of the public.
