Dr Sim’s statements reflect a narrow understanding of parliamentary democracy

Kuching: Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong Wui Wui has strongly rebutted remarks made by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, who claimed Sarawak’s political stability stems from the Democratic Action Party (DAP) not being part of the state government.

In a statement issued today, Violet Yong described Dr Sim’s remarks as “political ignorance” and “a gross insult” to the principles of parliamentary democracy.

“Let me make this clear. DAP is not in the Sarawak government because we respect the people’s will. We won only 2 out of 82 seats in the last state election.

“We accepted that result with humility and chose to serve in the role assigned to us – as the opposition,” said Violet Yong.

She emphasised that playing a check-and-balance role is fundamental to a healthy democracy, not a sign of political divisiveness.

Violet Yong also criticised the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP), a component of the GPS coalition, for aligning itself with Perikatan Nasional before the formation of the Madani Government, pointing out that PAS was a dominant and influential component to the coalition.

“They willingly placed themselves alongside extremists whose agenda ran counter to Sarawak’s multicultural values. That decision alone speaks volumes about their priorities and the compromises they are willing to make in the name of political expediency.

“SUPP has become nothing more than a meek junior partner, politically submissive to PBB. They toe the line, nod in silence, and remain conveniently quiet in the name of so-called “stability,” even as fundamental Sarawakian values are threatened,” she said.

She challenged Dr Sim to present any instance where DAP had divided Sarawakians through race or religion-based politics.

“Our record is clear. DAP has always fought for justice, transparency, and the rights of all Malaysians, regardless of background,” Yong said, adding that the party will continue advocating for fair and inclusive development while holding the government accountable.

“DAP Sarawak will not be silenced,” she concluded.
