Kuala Lumpur: DAPSY Sarawak has renewed its call for the federal government to immediately establish a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Tan Sri Azam Baki, while pledging to continue defending the rule of law through action.
Its Deputy Chief, Soo Tien Ren, said the proposed inquiry must thoroughly investigate Azam and all serious allegations surrounding the MACC while paving the way for wider institutional reforms.
He said reforms were necessary to ensure the anti-corruption agency would never become a tool for a small group of powerful individuals.
“Azam Baki may leave office, but the truth cannot leave with him,” Soo said in a statement after attending the “Arrest Azam Baki” rally.
He stressed that the expiry of Azam’s contract should not be treated as closure to unresolved questions surrounding the MACC chief’s tenure.
“A contract may end, but accountability must not end. The people can wait for due process, but the people cannot accept silence,” he said.
Soo added that the position was consistent with his previously stated view that the people must come first.
He said the rally’s broader message was that Malaysia’s institutions must be restored if the country is to move forward.
“If the rule of law is to be believed, it must not only punish the weak. It must also have the courage to investigate the powerful,” he said.
Soo also reiterated that DAPSY Sarawak would continue to support institutional reform, transparency, and accountability regardless of who holds power.
