Kuching: The Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) is urged to take immediate action after a collapsed fence on Jalan Kung Phin was linked to unaddressed erosion caused by a damaged earth drain.
Michael Kong Feng Nian, Special Assistant to Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen, has issued a clear demand to MPP: inspect and upgrade the earth drains along the road without further delay to prevent additional property damage and ensure public safety.
“This is a basic duty of the council. We demand that MPP immediately carry out inspection and upgrading works along Jalan Kung Phin. Ignoring the problem only puts more homes and lives at risk,” Michael Kong said in a statement.
The affected property owner, he explained, had already agreed to fully cover the cost of rebuilding the damaged fence. However, the erosion caused by the adjacent earth drain, which falls under the council’s jurisdiction, remains unresolved despite being reported promptly.
“Public infrastructure like earth drains is MPP’s responsibility. Deflecting blame is unacceptable when property is already being damaged and more could follow,” he added.
Michael Kong pointed out that soil erosion, if left unchecked, can lead to structural failures, injuries, or worse, especially during heavy rain. He urged the council not to wait for a more serious incident before acting.
“This is not just about one fence. The drain system along Jalan Kung Phin needs urgent attention. Residents have done their part by reporting it. Now MPP must do theirs,” he said.
