Sibu: The Hock Ming jetty at Jalan Kampung Hilir is set for a significant upgrade as part of the Program Mesra Rakyat Kerajaan Madani 2024, with safety and long-term functionality at the heart of the initiative.
Sibu MP Oscar Ling Chai Yew said that the construction work is expected to take approximately three months and aims to replace the existing wooden ramp with a reinforced concrete structure.
“The existing wooden jetty has become increasingly costly to maintain and poses safety risks, especially for residents who rely on it daily to cross from the west bank.
“This upgrade is necessary to ensure a safer and more sustainable solution for the community,” he said.
The construction project will involve dismantling the old jetty, laying solid foundations, erecting a new structural framework, and installing a concrete jetty built to withstand heavy use and weather conditions.
Oscar Ling noted that the project is funded by the Implementation Coordination Unit of the Prime Minister’s Department and will be carried out by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID).
During the construction period, the ferry service will be temporarily suspended, and commuters will need to use the two nearby jetties or the Igan Bridge as alternatives.
As the route passes through narrow roads in Kampung Hilir, the ferry is designated for motorcycles only.
The ferry operates daily from 4.30 am to 10 pm.
Oscar Ling reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that public infrastructure investments directly benefit the people.
“This project is more than just a physical upgrade. It’s about improving lives, ensuring safety, and meeting the real, everyday needs of our constituents,” he said.
