Kuching: The long-awaited Stutong Link Kuching Airport Southern Access Road and bridge project, which began in 2019, has finally been completed after seven years.

DAP Sarawak Chairman Chong Chieng Jen said the RM112 million project was first approved in 2019 under the then Pakatan Harapan Federal Government, which allocated RM20 million as the initial funding to kickstart construction.

“Since then, the project has seen leadership changes under three Works Ministers – Baru Bian, Fadillah Yusof, and, most recently, Alexander Nanta Linggi, before reaching completion.

“Despite accounting for delays caused by the one-year Movement Control Order (MCO) during the pandemic, the project still took six years of construction,” he said in a statement.

Chong welcomed the completion of the road but stressed the importance of stricter timelines for public infrastructure works.

“While I am glad to see the completion of the project, I wish to remind JKR that there should be strict timelines in the implementation of infrastructural projects, especially in city areas.

“Otherwise, planning will always be playing catch-up, and traffic congestion will only worsen,” he said.
