Kuching: Special Assistant to Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen, Michael Kong Feng Nian, has called out SUPP’s Wilfred Yap for allegedly dismissing calls for transparency in relation to a purported diesel smuggling scandal involving a Sarawak government-linked company (GLC).
Michael Kong said Sarawakians deserve answers rather than “political spin or attempts to cover up serious allegations of impropriety and graft.”
He criticised Yap for denouncing Chong’s demand for clarity on the matter, likening the response to BN Sarawak’s stance during the 1MDB scandal under former prime minister Najib Razak, when questions were often met with silence or attacks on critics.
“Wilfred Yap proudly boasts about Sarawak’s Ombudsman Ordinance, but what use is such legislation if GPS leaders themselves refuse to take issues of corruption seriously? A law on paper means nothing if it is not matched by political will,” Michael Kong said.
He added that Yap had campaigned in 2021 on the promise of serving as a check and balance in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN), but has instead chosen to defend GPS leaders unconditionally.
Michael Kong urged Yap to either press for accountability from the Sarawak GLC or refrain from criticising those who demand transparency.
“Sarawakians need leaders who are willing to ask the hard questions and fight for integrity in governance,” he stressed.
