Kuching: A young man distressed by relentless threats and demands from loan sharks has turned to Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen for assistance in lodging a police report against seven moneylenders for alleged extortion and criminal intimidation.
The ordeal began in March this year when the young man borrowed RM4,000. After deducting RM1,600 in advance interest and administrative fees, he only received RM2,400.
Struggling to repay the loan, he was persuaded to take further loans from other moneylenders, plunging him deeper into debt.
When repayments stalled, the loan sharks allegedly shifted their threats to his father, pressuring him to cover the debts. Out of fear, the father complied and made multiple payments.
By the end of August 2025, the father and son had already paid RM58,700 to the loan sharks, nearly 25 times the original amount received, yet some lenders reportedly continued to demand more.
Fearing there would be no end to the harassment, the father and son recently sought Chong’s intervention.
Chong, who is also the Padungan assemblyman, urged them to lodge a police report for protection and pledged to follow up on the investigation.
He also said he would raise the matter with Bank Negara, requesting scrutiny of the accounts used by the loan sharks, which may involve suspected “mule accounts.”
