Kuching: The appointment of Mas Gading MP Mordi Bimol as a Federal Deputy Minister has been welcomed by many Sarawakians, particularly within the Dayak community, as a recognition of a capable leader who represents Sarawak at the federal level.
ADUN for Pending, Violet Yong Wui Wui, expressed support for Mordi Bimol, stating that his appointment is a “proud moment for Sarawak” and a sign of progress for local leadership.
“Many Sarawakians, especially the Dayak community, welcome his appointment as recognition of a capable Sarawakian leader rising to serve at the federal level and to help fight for Sarawak’s interests,” she said in a statement.
Yong’s remarks came after the statements issued by the Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) leader, saying it is clear that SUPP is unhappy with Mordi’s appointment.
“Instead of celebrating the success of a Sarawakian Dayak leader, SUPP chooses to condemn and politicise the issue simply because the appointment comes from DAP.
“Why can’t SUPP be proud of our own Sarawakian Dayak rising leader? Why must SUPP continue to undermine Dayak representation and leadership whenever it does not fit their narrow political agenda?” Yong asked.
She added that SUPP’s response reflects discomfort with capable and independent Dayak leaders in positions of influence.
“This is not about Sarawak’s rights, nor about principles. This is about political jealousy and an inability to accept progress made by others,” she said.
Yong emphasised that Sarawak needs more leaders like Mordi, who “speak up, work hard, and represent the people regardless of race or party.”
She warned that attacks on such leaders only expose a disconnect between SUPP and the aspirations of Sarawakians today.
“Sarawakians are watching. The people know who is genuinely fighting for them, and who is merely trying to score cheap political points at the expense of unity and progress,” she said.
