Kuching: Concerns over the welfare of a homeless woman who has been living outside Everwin Supermarket in Kenyalang Park for more than a month have prompted Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong Wui Wui to demand immediate intervention from the Sarawak Social Welfare Department.
The woman has reportedly remained in the area since early May 2025. Despite growing concern from the public and multiple reports submitted through official channels, the relevant authorities have yet to take effective action.
“It is unacceptable that a vulnerable individual is left without any support or shelter, exposed daily to the elements and public scrutiny.
“This is not just a question of public image, it’s a matter of human dignity and compassion,” Violet Yong said in a statement today.
Repeated appeals met with inaction
After being alerted by local residents, the DAP Kuching Service Team promptly raised the matter with the Sarawak Social Welfare Department in early May.
Welfare officers did engage with the woman initially but reportedly abandoned follow-up efforts after failing to locate or contact her family.
Violet Yong expressed dismay at the department’s response, stating that the inability to reach the woman’s next of kin should not excuse continued inaction.
“The duty of care doesn’t end when family cannot be found. The state has a responsibility to provide support, especially when the individual is clearly in need and unable to advocate for herself,” she added.
Brought to the attention of the state assembly
On 28 May 2025, during a sitting of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly, Violet Yong personally raised the issue with the Minister for Welfare, Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing, Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah. She urged the ministry to take direct and immediate steps to resolve the case.
Additionally, the DAP Kuching Service Team lodged a police report to underscore the urgency of the matter. Yet, Violet Yong noted that no tangible progress has been made and the woman remains in the same location.
Public distress and broader concerns
Members of the public have continued to express concern for the woman’s wellbeing.
Beyond the immediate humanitarian concern, residents have also raised issues relating to cleanliness, safety, and the broader implications of such visible neglect in urban spaces.
Next steps
Violet Yong affirmed her commitment to following up with the Ministry of Welfare and other relevant bodies.
“I will continue to press the authorities until this woman receives the care she needs and deserves” Violet Yong said.
