Kuching: In conjunction with Children’s Day and Hari OKU Persekutuan, Bandar Kuching MP, Dr Kelvin Yii Lee Wuen, has announced an additional RM10,000 from his upcoming allocation to support the continued growth and empowerment of students at Sekolah Khas PERKATA.

Speaking during the school’s Children’s Day and Hari OKU Persekutuan celebrations, Kelvin Yii highlighted the school’s role in fostering inclusivity and providing opportunities for children with different abilities.

“Supporting PERKATA is not an act of charity. It is an investment in the future of young Malaysians who can become artists, entrepreneurs, athletes, and community leaders.

“Every contribution provides tools, therapies, and opportunities that transform doubts into confidence and possibility into achievement,” he said.

He shared inspiring stories of Malaysians with different abilities, including a non-verbal autistic boy from Kuala Lumpur who communicates through art, a young man with Down syndrome in Perak who became a co-owner of his family café, and a boy with cerebral palsy who excelled in wheelchair racing and went on to represent Malaysia nationally.

“These individuals remind us that talent exists everywhere. The real test is whether society is willing to nurture it. To the students of PERKATA, your courage and determination inspire all of us,” he said.

Kelvin Yii also emphasised the importance of community involvement, urging corporate leaders and the public to contribute, volunteer, and advocate for an inclusive Sarawak.

“A society is ultimately judged by how it treats its most vulnerable members. We fall short only when we choose indifference. We rise when we stand together,” he added.

To date, Kelvin Yii’s office has contributed RM35,000 to PERKATA’s programmes, including the Sentuhan Kasih initiative.

The event saw students, teachers, and parents come together to celebrate achievements and highlight the potential of persons with different abilities in Malaysia.
