Kuching: Greater community support is needed to help families caring for loved ones with long-term illnesses, says Special Assistant to Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen, Michael Kong Feng Nian, who recently visited and extended financial assistance to two families facing significant financial and emotional hardship.
Kong said many families quietly struggle behind closed doors when a breadwinner becomes seriously ill or a family member requires long-term care.
“We remain committed to reaching out to families facing such challenges because no one should have to struggle alone,” he said.
He also called on more members of the community, charitable organisations, and relevant agencies to work together to support caregivers and families burdened by chronic illnesses.
One of the families visited was that of Mr Chong, who has been bedridden and in a vegetative state since February, following serious health complications.
Once the family’s sole breadwinner working as a labourer, he now relies entirely on tube feeding and daily medication. With limited savings and no SOCSO protection, the family has struggled to cope with mounting medical expenses. At the same time, his three children have entered the workforce after secondary school to help support the household.
Kong also met Mr Chia, who gave up his job to become the full-time caregiver for his wife, who has undergone dialysis treatment for the past 11 years and had a leg amputated due to diabetes complications. The family now depends on assistance from the Welfare Department, while their son shoulders much of the remaining medical and household expenses.
Kong said both families reflect the hidden sacrifices made by many caregivers across the country.
“Serious illness does not only affect the patient. It places enormous emotional, physical and financial pressure on the entire family,” he said.
He expressed hope that stronger cooperation between the public, charitable groups and government agencies would ensure more families receive the assistance, compassion and encouragement they need during difficult times.
