Sibu: DAP Sarawak Deputy Chairman and Lanang MP Alice Lau Kiong Yieng has strongly condemned an individual believed to be a secondary school teacher who was accused of producing drawings that mocked married and pregnant women, especially those in politics, implying they are unfit to perform their duties.

Lau described the act as “deeply prejudiced” and “blatantly sexist,” saying it reflects discriminatory attitudes that should have no place in society.

“Mocking married or pregnant women by claiming they are unfit for work is discrimination against all women.

“It is an insult to every mother, wife, and daughter who works hard every day. Anyone who produces such drawings is simply unfit to be a teacher,” she said in a statement.

Lau, who also serves as Deputy Speaker, stressed that being “married” or “pregnant” has never been a measure of competence in any field, including politics, education, healthcare, or business.

She added that women worldwide, many of whom are both mothers and professionals, have made significant contributions as leaders, scientists, entrepreneurs, and professionals.

“They not only care for their families but also excel in their respective fields, driving reforms and serving the public. In Malaysia, many women work tirelessly every day, shouldering responsibilities and contributing meaningfully to the nation and society,” she said.

Lau expressed shock that an educator would resort to such demeaning depictions of women, warning that such behavior not only violates professional ethics but could also mislead students and distort their values.

“In a diverse and equality-minded society, we must never tolerate any form of demeaning stereotypes against women.

“A woman’s worth is not defined by whether she is married or pregnant, but by her intelligence, hard work, professionalism, and resilience,” she said.

She emphasised that every woman deserves respect regardless of her family roles and condemned any attempt to shame women or undermine their abilities in leadership and the workplace.

“Malaysia is home to countless strong, capable, and responsible women who have long proven that marriage is not an obstacle, pregnancy is not a weakness, and gender is never a limitation,” Lau added.

She called on the public to reject gender discrimination and support efforts to ensure women enjoy equal opportunities and dignity across all sectors, while encouraging more women to take on leadership roles and contribute to national progress.
