Kuching: DAP Sarawak has described the appointment of Mas Gading MP Mordi Bimol as Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports as a historic milestone for the party.
The Chairman Chong Chieng Jen said Mordi is the first Dayak MP from DAP to be appointed as a deputy minister, marking an important development in the party’s history.
“It also shows clearly that DAP Sarawak is a party for all races and puts to rest the malicious and baseless accusation that DAP Sarawak is a Chinese party,” he said in a statement.
According to Chong, Mordi joined DAP Sarawak in 2011 at the age of 26. Despite losing in the 2013 General Election and the 2016 Sarawak state election, he remained with the party and continued serving the people in his area.
“His persistence paid off when he won the Mas Gading parliamentary seat in the 2018 General Election. He later successfully defended the seat with an increased majority in the 2022 General Election,” he said.
Chong said there had been repeated attempts by others to persuade Mordi to leave DAP Sarawak, but he rejected the offers and remained loyal to the party’s principles throughout his political journey.
He added that Mordi’s appointment was based on merit and made upon the recommendation and strong support of DAP Sarawak, noting that the position carries significant responsibility.
Chong said the party has full confidence in Mordi’s ability to perform his duties and contribute to the development of youth and the improvement of sports standards in Sarawak.
Mordi was appointed Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during a special press conference on the MADANI Government Cabinet reshuffle on Tuesday.
He, who is also the DAP Sarawak Vice Chairman, is a new face in the cabinet, taking over responsibilities previously held by Hang Tuah Jaya MP Adam Adli Abd Halim.
The Ceremony for the Presentation of the Letter of Appointment and the Oath-Taking Ceremony for the Position, Loyalty, and Secrecy Oaths took place at the National Palace yesterday.
