Kuching: Residents of Lorong Apt 2, off Jalan Datuk Mohammad Musa, are growing increasingly anxious after a section of the road in front of several houses was reported to have sunk by more than one foot, raising serious public safety concerns.
According to residents, the issue was first reported to Majlis Perbandaran Kota Samarahan (MPKS) on 28 November 2025.
However, despite the complaints, no concrete remedial action has been taken so far.
Over the past few weeks, the condition of the road has continued to deteriorate due to ongoing soil erosion. What initially appeared as surface cracks has since worsened into visible subsidence, posing a potential danger to homeowners and motorists using the road.
Concerned for their safety, affected residents sought assistance from Michael Kong Feng Nian, Special Assistant to Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen, who described the situation as alarming and unacceptable.
“Infrastructure failures of this nature should never be taken lightly. Roads do not sink overnight without cause, and once erosion begins, the risk of sudden collapse increases significantly,” he said.
Kong stressed that waiting for an accident to occur before taking action would be irresponsible, especially given that residents had already raised early warnings.
He urged MPKS to treat the matter with urgency by conducting an immediate site inspection and safety assessment, implementing temporary mitigation measures, and following up with permanent rectification works to prevent further deterioration.
“Public safety must always take precedence over bureaucratic delays and excuses. Too often, we see authorities becoming reactive only after tragedy strikes.
“By then, the damage is already done, and lives may have been lost. It is time for a shift in mindset,” he added, saying that authorities must be proactive, decisive, and responsive, especially when residents have already given early warnings.
