Kuching: The Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board (LPKP) Sarawak has called on Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) to review its traffic management system and improve geo-fencing arrangements for e-hailing services at Kuching International Airport to address congestion issues and improve overall efficiency for airport users.
LPKP Sarawak Chairman Michael Kong said the proposal was raised during a recent engagement session with MAHB in discussing the implementation of geo-fencing by e-hailing operators at the airport.
The session, also attended by CVLB Sarawak board members and representatives from Grab and Maxim, served as a platform for stakeholders to coordinate efforts to ensure smoother operations.
He noted that one key concern was the large number of vehicles parked in designated waiting zones and along roadside areas, resulting in frequent traffic bottlenecks.
“There have been instances where members of the public reportedly reached the check-in counters late due to delays caused by vehicles stopping or parking indiscriminately by the roadside,” he said.
Kong said clearer and more prominent signage must be installed to better inform motorists of the designated lanes for public drop-off and pick-up, as well as clearly marked zones for taxis and e-hailing vehicles.
“Proper signage is essential to ensure motorists understand where they are supposed to go. This will help reduce confusion and minimise instances of indiscriminate stopping or parking along the roadside, which contribute to traffic congestion within the airport vicinity,” he said.
He also suggested that MAHB explore identifying and allocating suitable spaces for vehicle waiting or parking.
“This is particularly important given that the number of available parking bays has decreased significantly due to the ongoing construction works for the ART station.
“With increasing passenger traffic at Kuching International Airport, proactive traffic management measures are essential to ensure efficiency and a positive experience for all airport users,” he said.
Kong added that he looks forward to continued collaboration between MAHB, LPKP Sarawak and e-hailing operators to enhance coordination and implement practical solutions that will benefit the travelling public.
