Kuching: The state-owned airline, AirBorneo Airways, announced its Kuching–Kuala Lumpur fares last night, with one-way tickets priced at RM375 and return tickets at RM750. The pricing has disappointed many Sarawakians.

Before the airline was established, the GPS government assured Sarawakians it would provide more affordable airfares. However, the fares announced are clearly on the high side and are even more expensive than those offered by some existing airlines. Does this mean that the promise of providing cheaper airfares for Sarawakians can no longer be fulfilled, and that Sarawakians will instead have to bear even higher travel costs?

To be fair, the announced fares are all-inclusive, covering checked baggage, seat selection, and in-flight meals. Comparisons should therefore be made with full-service carriers such as Malaysia Airlines and Batik Air. Nevertheless, many netizens have already pointed out that both airlines sometimes offer lower fares, questioning whether the Sarawak government’s commitment has been broken.

The Kuching–Kuala Lumpur route is frequently used by Sarawakians for business travel, education, and short visits. Many passengers do not require checked baggage or seat selection. Therefore, AirBorneo should introduce more flexible fare options, allowing travellers to pay only for the services they need, similar to the options already offered by Batik Air.

More importantly, AirBorneo was established to benefit Sarawakians. It should introduce special fares for Sarawakians, such as discounted tickets for holders of the “K” identity card, ensuring local residents genuinely enjoy the advantages of a state-owned airline.

AirBorneo should also expand its codeshare partnerships with international airlines and, over the longer term, work towards eligibility for membership in a global airline alliance such as Star Alliance, Oneworld, or SkyTeam. This would provide Sarawakians with more international travel options and access to frequent-flyer benefits.

As a full-service airline, AirBorneo must also maintain high service standards, particularly during flight delays or cancellations. Passengers should receive timely assistance, including meals and accommodation where necessary.

While AirBorneo is still in its early stages, there is significant room for improvement. As a publicly funded airline, its performance must be closely monitored to ensure it delivers meaningful benefits to the people of Sarawak.

DAP Sarawak will continue to stand alongside the people of Sarawak by monitoring AirBorneo’s operations and speaking up for passengers and Sarawakians whenever necessary.
