Kuala Lumpur: Newly appointed Senator Larry Asap has pledged to make education reform and youth development central priorities in his role in the Dewan Negara.
In a statement, Larry emphasised that his background as an educator remains a driving force in his public service, noting that education issues in Malaysia are “challenging and wide-ranging” and require stronger collaboration between federal authorities and state stakeholders, including in Sarawak.
“The soul of an educator remains deeply rooted in my heart. Resolving these educational issues requires cooperation from all parties, both at the Federal level and within the Sarawak region.
“We must work together to find solutions to every problem within the nation’s education system and policies,” he said.
Larry also stressed his commitment to serving as a voice for educators on the ground, saying he intends to use his position in the Senate to raise concerns about national education policy and the development of school infrastructure and facilities, especially in rural and interior areas.
Beyond education, he highlighted youth empowerment as another key focus, noting that young Malaysians are the country’s future leaders and face significant social mobility challenges.
He urged young people to actively engage in national discussions by bringing forward issues, ideas, and solutions.
He added that he would use the Dewan Negara platform to channel public voices, proposals, and criticism into parliamentary debate, particularly from educators and youth groups.
Larry, who is also DAP Sarawak Assistant Secretary, expressed gratitude for the royal assent and thanked leadership within the DAP, including Secretary-General Anthony Loke and DAP Sarawak Chairman Chong Chieng Jen, for their support and trust in younger leadership.
Earlier today, Larry took his oath of office before the Senate president, Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah.
