Pending: Residents of Jalan Selangan Batu have been provided with 31 fully serviced fire extinguishers as part of an initiative to improve fire safety awareness and emergency preparedness in the community.

The move comes amid concerns over narrow access roads in the area, which can hinder the rapid response of fire engines during emergencies.

Local residents are therefore encouraged to have properly functioning fire extinguishers to respond immediately in the event of a fire.

“I want to stress that fire extinguishers that are not regularly serviced and inspected may fail when they are needed most, posing serious safety risks.

“After learning of the residents’ need, I ensured that all extinguishers were thoroughly inspected and confirmed to be in good working condition before distribution,” said ADUN for Pending Violet Yong.

Yong emphasised that fire safety should not only be addressed after an incident occurs.

“Regular inspection and maintenance of fire-fighting equipment are equally important,” she said.

She hopes this initiative will encourage residents to routinely check their fire extinguishers and prioritise household and community fire safety.

In addition, Yong urged the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) to consider upgrading the area’s underground fire hydrants to standing hydrants, which would enable quicker, more efficient access during emergencies and further enhance the community’s fire-fighting capabilities.

“I will continue to engage closely with local residents and proactively assist with public safety initiatives to create a safer living environment in the area,” she added.
