Kuching: Seventeen sectors of the Pan Borneo Highway, stretching from Teluk Melano to Permyjaya, Miri, have been officially gazetted under “List 1” of the Weight Restriction Order, marking a significant milestone in Sarawak’s transport infrastructure.
The Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP) Sarawak Chairman, Michael Kong Feng Nian, said that the gazettal confirms that the highway is now built to the highest standard, on par with roads in Peninsular Malaysia.
Meanwhile, he said, the remaining nine sectors are currently undergoing the same process.
“This achievement did not happen overnight. The process of upgrading and reclassifying the Pan Borneo Highway has been an ongoing effort involving multiple agencies, including the LPKP Sarawak, JPJ Sarawak, JKR Sarawak, and Ministry of Transport Sarawak,” he said.
Earlier today, LPKP Sarawak visited the JPJ Sarawak enforcement station here to better understand how they conduct enforcement during the ongoing operation against the overloading of commercial vehicles.
JKR Sarawak’s representatives were also present, and LPKP Sarawak took the opportunity to discuss the issue of the vehicle weight restrictions for Sarawak, particularly the Pan Borneo Highway.
He noted that the upgrade also brings good news for lorry operators across the state.
“The maximum permissible gross weight limits for heavy vehicles plying this road will be revised upwards in due course, i.e., 5-axle lorries may now carry BDM up to 45 tonnes, and 6-axle lorries up to 50 tonnes.
“This upgrade is a reflection of the improved infrastructure capacity of the Pan Borneo Highway and the Federal Government’s commitment to balancing road safety, transport efficiency, and economic needs,” he said.
He also emphasised that LPKP Sarawak will continue collaborating with JKR Sarawak, JPJ Sarawak, and other relevant agencies to ensure that transport policies remain progressive, safe, and supportive of Sarawak’s long-term growth.
