Kuching: The Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak bid farewell this morning to one of its founding veterans, our comrade Lim Guan Sin, who played a pivotal role in rebuilding the party’s grassroots in Kuching during its most challenging years.
In a heartfelt tribute, DAP Sarawak Chairman Chong Chieng Jen described Lim as a mentor, comrade, and friend who dedicated his life to the party, Chinese education, and the community.
“When I first joined the DAP, it was Comrade Lim who guided me on my political journey. Today, it is with deep sorrow that I accompany him on his final journey,” Chong said.
He recalled Lim’s unwavering commitment in the late 1990s, when mass defections in Kuching nearly crippled the party’s grassroots leadership.
“Lim stepped forward to rebuild the organisation, even offering his company’s office as the party headquarters. He contributed funds, raised donations, and tirelessly recruited new members.
“When there were no cadres, Lim personally took charge of rebuilding the team. Even his son, the late Lim Fung, joined us in the struggle.
“I still remember asking him then: ‘Aren’t you afraid that by coming forward like this, you might face political pressure from SUPP and that your business could be affected?’ He replied boldly and with pride: ‘What is there to fear? I even told my customers that if they are party members, they can enjoy a special discount!” Chong said.
Chong, who is also Stampin MP and Padungan Assemblyman, said Lim’s sacrifices laid the foundation for DAP’s resurgence in Kuching.
“In 2004, the party recaptured the Kuching parliamentary seat, and two years later achieved a historic breakthrough by winning three state constituencies.
“Throughout his life, Lim gave selflessly to the party, championed Chinese education, and remained steadfast and righteous towards his friends. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of DAP members.
“Though we grieve his passing, his indomitable spirit will live on in our hearts. May he rest in peace.”
Among the DAP leaders who paid their last respects at the funeral service at Lim’s family residence were DAP Sarawak Vice Chairman and Mas Gading MP, Mordi Bimol; DAP Sarawak Publicity Secretary and Bandar Kuching MP, Dr Kelvin Yii Lee Wuen; and DAP Sarawak Organising Secretary and Pending Assemblywoman, Violet Yong Wui Wui.
They were joined by hundreds of DAP members, family members, and friends, who gathered to honour Lim’s lifelong contributions.
