Kuala Lumpur: Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen has submitted an emergency motion to the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat under Standing Order 18, calling for an urgent parliamentary debate on a series of stone-throwing incidents that have plagued Jalan Batu Kawa in Kuching over the past six months.
In his motion, Chong highlighted that unknown individuals riding motorcycles have repeatedly thrown stones at oncoming vehicles along the stretch of road, damaging windscreens and causing injuries to both drivers and passengers.
“This is not just a matter of public nuisance. It’s a serious threat to road safety and public security.
“Despite efforts by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), including setting up roadblocks, and the local council’s installation of CCTVs in the affected area, the perpetrator remains at large,” Chong stated in a statement.
He expressed concern that the persistent failure to apprehend the culprit reflects poorly on the effectiveness of law enforcement and raises serious questions about the government’s ability to ensure the safety of its citizens. The incidents have also gained widespread attention on social media, further fuelling public anxiety.
Chong noted that motorists who use Jalan Batu Kawa regularly now live in constant fear of being targeted, and warned that the situation could escalate to fatalities if not addressed promptly.
“The issue affects public interest and demands immediate attention. Parliament must debate this urgently to find a swift resolution before any lives are lost,” he urged in the motion.
The Speaker is expected to decide on Thursday whether the motion will be debated in the House or the Second Chamber or be rejected.
Chong expressed hope that by bringing the matter before Parliament and the federal government, the responsible individuals can be swiftly identified and brought to justice.
