Sarikei: The Democratic Action Party Socialist Youth (DAPSY) Sarawak has expressed full support for the appointment of Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen as the new DAP Parliamentary Leader, calling it a significant recognition of Sarawak’s voice in national politics.
Chong, who serves as DAP’s National Vice Chairman, Sarawak State Chairman, and Member of Parliament for Stampin, was recently appointed to lead the party’s parliamentary team.
Senator Roderick Wong Siew Lead, Deputy Chief of DAPSY Sarawak, described the appointment as both a personal recognition of Chong’s long-standing political service and a broader statement of inclusion by the party’s central leadership.
“This appointment is not only a recognition of Chong’s capabilities and contributions but also carries profound symbolic significance.
“It shows that the DAP central leadership values the voices of Sarawak and recognises East Malaysia’s rightful place in national politics,” he said in a statement.
Wong added that the move aligns with DAP’s long-standing vision of building a national, multicultural, and inclusive Malaysia.
DAP, which is currently part of the federal governing coalition, remains in opposition in Sarawak. Wong noted that this “dual role” is not contradictory but rather demonstrates a commitment to both reform and accountability.
“At the federal level, DAP pushes for fair reforms. In Sarawak, we hold the state government accountable. Both roles ultimately serve the same goal – the well-being of the people,” he said.
Wong also highlighted Chong’s record of advocating for Sarawakian interests in Parliament and the State Assembly, including efforts to ensure fair resource allocation, the implementation of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), regional autonomy, and infrastructure development.
“This appointment is not just an honour – it is a responsibility. Sarawak must be an active participant in shaping national policy, not just a passive recipient,” Wong emphasised.
DAPSY Sarawak reiterated its support for Chong in his new role and pledged to continue serving the people and holding the Sarawak state government to account.
“DAP Sarawak will not remain silent. We will not compromise. We will continue to stand firm in fighting for the dignity and rightful entitlements of the people of Sarawak,” said Wong.
