Kuching: The tragic death of a female student from Kuching, found dead in her dormitory room in Cyberjaya, has prompted Bandar Kuching MP Dr. Kelvin Yii Lee Wuen to call for an immediate, thorough, and transparent investigation by the police and relevant authorities.
In what is suspected to be a case of murder, Dr. Kelvin Yii described the incident as a “wake-up call” for both educational institutions and government bodies responsible for student welfare, urging the Ministry of Higher Education to review and strengthen safety protocols in student accommodations nationwide urgently.
“This tragedy raises serious concerns about student safety, especially for those living far away from home.
“Repeated warnings over the years regarding security lapses from broken CCTVs to poorly lit walkways were ignored. This heinous crime is a tragic outcome of a failed system to protect our students,” he said in a strongly worded statement.
Dr. Kelvin Yii emphasised that student safety must be a core responsibility of educational institutions, not an afterthought.
He urged hostel and university management to take proactive steps, including installing functioning security systems, ensuring secure access to dormitories, establishing emergency reporting mechanisms, and improving coordination with local law enforcement.
“The safety of students cannot be reduced to a box-ticking exercise. Prevention must be the priority,” he added.
Calling for justice, Dr. Kelvin Yii said the full weight of the law must be applied without delay and that the perpetrators must be held accountable.
“The public deserves the truth, and her family deserves justice and closure. No family should have to suffer such a devastating loss under horrifying and suspicious circumstances,” he said.
He concluded his statement by emphasising that the grief felt by the community must lead to genuine systemic change, ensuring that no other student or family suffers a similar fate.
“May her soul rest in peace, and may her family find strength in this time of unimaginable grief,” he said.
