Sibu: Sibu MP Oscar Ling Chai Yew has reaffirmed his commitment to fostering unity and strengthening longhouse community ties by distributing allocation cheques to 84 Jawatankuasa Kemajuan dan Keselamatan Kampung (JKKK) within the Sibu parliamentary constituency.
The funds are designated for Christmas 2025 and New Year 2026 community programmes. Additionally, nine longhouses received sponsored festive gift hampers.
During the presentation ceremony, Ling briefed longhouse chiefs and representatives on reforms introduced by the Malaysia MADANI government, covering legislative, institutional, and economic measures aimed at advancing national development.
He stated that under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, ongoing efforts to reduce the national debt, strengthen the ringgit, attract foreign investments, and elevate Malaysia’s global standing have begun to show positive results.
Ling also highlighted the geographical challenges of serving the Sibu constituency, noting that some longhouses require up to 90 minutes of travel by car, while others can only be reached after two hours by longboat.
Despite these distances, he said Christmas remains a unifying celebration for longhouse communities, offering an opportunity to strengthen bonds and share in the spirit of faith.
With 2026 approaching, Ling extended his best wishes for continued progress and improved livelihoods for all residents.
He emphasised that only longhouses located within the Sibu parliamentary constituency qualify for the allocations, covering areas such as Rassau, Tutus, Bungan, Sungai Sebedil, Pasai, Penasu, Bawang Assan, Rantau Panjang, Oya, Teku and Sungai Banyok.
Ling added that Christmas holds deep cultural and spiritual significance for the predominantly Christian Iban community in Sarawak, particularly in Sibu, and the allocations aim to support festive activities, ensuring residents can celebrate Christmas and welcome the New Year more meaningfully.
