Press Statement By Michael Kong:

Dr Sim Kui Hian should stop covering up for the weakness of his colleague Alexander Nanta Linggi. Dr Sim Kui Hian’s recent statement about the ‘Timah’ whiskey is simply ignorant of the background facts surrounding the issue. Of all people, Dr Sim Kui Hian is one of the last person who can condemn others for the current ‘Timah’ branded whiskey issue.

Just to jog Dr Sim Kui Hian’s memory, Alexander Nanta Linggi (a Sarawakian) is the current Secretary-General for GPS. At the same time, Alexander Nanta Linggi is the current Federal Minister for Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs. It was Alexander Nanta Linggi who caved in to political pressure and organised a meeting with the manufacturers of ‘Timah’ whiskey instead of standing up for this home brand that have brought recognition to Malaysian products.

As a result of the meeting, the manufacturers are now considering to rename their brand of whiskey. It cannot be pure coincidence such a consideration only came to light after all the political brickbats and the meeting with Alexander Nanta Linggi.

It is a shame that our country is going down this road of ignorance, idiocracy and extremism. Instead of blaming others, Dr Sim Kui Hian should speak to his coalition leaders and fellow MPs from PN before speaking out. This issue only started because of PAS and by keeping PAS in the government, GPS and SUPP are complicit to any impingement of the rights of the minorities.
