Sibu: In a crucial reminder to all business owners, Sibu MP Oscar Ling Chai Yew has called for immediate compliance with employee declaration requirements under the Sarawak Labour Ordinance.
This warning follows recent inspections by the Sibu Labour Department, which revealed that several businesses had failed to fulfill their statutory obligations.
Oscar Ling stressed that employers, whether currently hiring, planning to recruit, or terminating staff, must complete the required declaration process within 90 days, as mandated by Section 60A of the Sarawak Labour Ordinance.
“The regulation applies to businesses in sectors such as agriculture, timber, and related industries, especially when establishing a new venture, taking over operations, changing a business name, or relocating.
“This is a statutory responsibility, and business owners are urged to take it seriously and not treat it lightly,” he said in a statement.
The Labour Department’s recent spot checks have revealed that many business owners, particularly those with long-standing operations, may still be unaware of these crucial legal responsibilities.
Oscar Ling emphasised employers found to have failed to complete the declaration process during Labour Department inspections may face fines or other enforcement actions.
He reassured that the declaration process is simple and accessible. Business owners can download the required form here: https://www.jtkswk.gov.my/v2/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/BORANG_MAKLUMAT_OPERASI_PERNIAGAAN_60A.pdf.
“Once completed, the form should be submitted to:
Sibu Labour Department (Pejabat Tenaga Kerja Sibu), Tingkat 3, Wisma Persekutuan Blok 3, Brooke, Sibu.
“For any assistance, business owners are encouraged to contact the DAP Sibu Service Centre at 084-322001. The centre also offers in-person help, ensuring business operators can easily navigate the process and stay compliant with employment laws,” he added.
Oscar Ling concluded by highlighting the importance of keeping businesses legally protected and maintaining fair labour practices, stating, “It’s not just about avoiding penalties; it’s about doing the right thing for your employees and your business.”
