Sibu: Residents of the Kwong Hua area in Sungai Sadit have voiced growing concerns over frequent flooding in their homes during the rainy season, prompting a site visit from Irene Wong, Special Assistant to Sibu MP Oscar Ling.
The affected residents reported that the area’s drainage problems started after a pumping station project converted an existing drainage ditch into a conduit for laying water pipes.
No replacement system was constructed, resulting in severe drainage inefficiencies. During heavy rain, water backs up and floods nearby homes, disrupting daily life and damaging property.
In response, Wong has urged the Sibu Rural District Council to take immediate and comprehensive action to address the worsening situation.
“There is a need for a more systematic and sustainable drainage plan, particularly for the western parts of Sibu.
“We cannot allow residents to continue suffering due to inadequate infrastructure,” Wong said during the visit.
She further called on the authorities to re-excavate the blocked drains or introduce alternative drainage systems to ensure effective water flow and prevent future flooding.
The service team of MP Oscar Ling has pledged to continue monitoring the issue and working with relevant agencies to ensure a timely and effective resolution.
