Kuching: The Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP) Sarawak hopes to work closely with the Sarawak Skills Development Association for Persons with Disabilities (SOSDA) to organise more activities for the group, following an inspiring account involving Bas.My Kuching user, Mohd Shahril.
During a recent meeting with SOSDA representatives, Dunstan and Mohd Shahril, LPKP Sarawak Chairman Michael Kong Feng Nian highlighted how Bas.My Kuching has become a crucial enabler for individuals with disabilities seeking opportunities for growth, training, and social connection.
According to Michael Kong, Mohd Shahril, who travels from Serian to the Boulevard Shopping Mall using Bas.My Kuching has become an active member of SOSDA.
“His story reflects the transformative impact of accessible transport. At age 16, he survived a motorcycle accident that claimed his friend’s life and left him permanently disabled on his left side, with impaired speech. Unable to complete his secondary education, he faced an uncertain future.
“The introduction of Bas.My Kuching allowed him to reconnect with the community. The accessible and affordable public transport service enabled him to become familiar with SOSDA and meet Dunstan, who later assisted him in enrolling in Giatmara, a training institution under the Ministry of Rural Development that provides vocational and skills training.
“Through this, Mohd Shahril has been given a second chance to equip himself with practical skills, empowering him to improve his livelihood and contribute back to the community,” he said.
Michael Kong said stories like Mohd Shahril’s illustrate how inclusive initiatives such as Bas.My Kuching can reshape lives.
He emphasised that Bas.My Kuching is not only a mobility service, but also a platform for opportunities and social participation.
“We look forward to working closely with SOSDA to organise more activities for the special needs community and to ensure that our public transport system continues to serve as a bridge towards empowerment and social progress,” he said.
