Bau: Mas Gading MP Mordi Bimol has urged the government to expedite comprehensive reforms to Malaysia’s health financing system to ensure its long-term sustainability and continued accessibility for all citizens.
He said such reforms are crucial to maintaining a resilient public healthcare system that allows Malaysians to enjoy quality healthcare services without facing excessive financial burdens.
“I believe it is time for the government to strengthen the health financing structure to ensure the system remains sustainable and capable of meeting the people’s needs in the long run,” he said in a statement.
Mordi said that during a recent Dewan Rakyat session, he raised questions about the government’s readiness to overhaul the public health financing system. This includes the potential introduction of a national social health contribution scheme similar to Singapore’s MediSave model to reduce full reliance on government subsidies.
He welcomed the explanation from Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Dzulkefly Ahmad, who stated that the government is currently focusing on establishing the National Health Fund, as outlined in the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK-13).
According to Mordi, the fund will consolidate resources from various channels to finance healthcare services nationwide, rather than relying solely on employee contributions or government allocations.
He also expressed support for the government’s initiative to explore the use of the EPF Sejahtera Account as a long-term health savings mechanism, which he said could help Malaysians plan for their lifetime healthcare needs and cushion the impact of medical inflation.
In addition, Mordi welcomed the government’s move to introduce standardised and voluntary basic medical insurance and takaful products, as announced in Budget 2026, noting that this would expand access to quality private healthcare services at affordable rates while offering greater options to the public.
“This health financing reform is a crucial step toward building a fair, inclusive, and sustainable system. I urge the government to accelerate the implementation of this transformation plan by engaging all relevant stakeholders including healthcare experts, industry players, and the public to ensure the National Health Fund truly benefits all Malaysians,” he added.
