Sibu: After years of grappling with persistent muddy and stagnant water conditions, residents and traders in Durin Bazaar are finally seeing progress with a dedicated earth-filling project aimed at resolving the long-standing drainage and flooding issues in the area.
The project, officially known as “Projek Menembok Tanah di Durin Bazaar” is being financed through phased allocations from the Lanang parliamentary constituency totaling RM150,000. The funding was disbursed in three stages: RM50,000 in 2018, another RM50,000 in 2019, and a final RM50,000 in 2024.
The condition of the site has long been a source of frustration for the local community. Poorly leveled land and inadequate drainage systems caused frequent water stagnation, particularly after heavy rainfall.
This not only created an unpleasant environment but also raised health concerns, disrupted access to businesses, and contributed to the general decline of infrastructure quality in the area.
Speaking during a site visit to review the project’s progress, Alice Lau Kiong Yieng, Deputy Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat and Lanang MP, acknowledged the urgency of resolving the issue.
“This is not just about aesthetics or infrastructure; it’s about restoring basic livability for the residents of Durin.
“The stagnant water problem has plagued the community for far too long, and this project is a direct intervention to put an end to it,” said Alice Lau.
According to Alice Lau, the project is expected to significantly improve drainage efficiency and make the area safer and more accessible upon completion.
“This effort reflects our broader commitment to resolving grassroots issues with practical, long-term solutions,” she added.
