Kuching: DAP Stampin has expanded its community welfare efforts by providing practical assistance to young families and households caring for persons with special needs, highlighting the growing financial pressures faced by vulnerable families amid the rising cost of living.
Special Assistant to Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen, Michael Kong Feng Nian, said the party has been carrying out a diaper assistance programme over the past three months to help ease the burden on parents with young children.
The latest phase of the initiative was conducted in collaboration with St Ann’s Catholic Church and the St Vincent de Paul Conference, with 100 packets of diapers handed over for distribution to families in need.
Michael said diapers are an essential household item, and rising prices have made it increasingly difficult for some parents to cope with basic childcare expenses. He added that the church and welfare organisation were able to identify families genuinely facing financial hardship through their longstanding community outreach programmes.
In a separate outreach effort, Michael also visited several families in Kampung Sungai Tapang who are caring for children and adults with special needs, where food items were distributed to provide temporary relief.
Among the families visited was that of young Aroyyan Dayen, who was born prematurely and has been diagnosed with global developmental delay and experiences epileptic seizures, requiring constant care from his parents.
He also met Mohd Marzulkiflie, who lives with mental health challenges and depends on his parents for daily care and supervision.
Michael said many caregivers make significant sacrifices to ensure their loved ones receive the attention, treatment and support they need, often while facing uncertainty about their long-term future.
He stressed that although food aid and diapers may appear to be modest contributions, they provide meaningful support to families dealing with mounting financial pressures and caregiving responsibilities.
DAP Stampin, he said, will continue working with religious bodies, NGOs, community organisations and relevant government agencies to identify vulnerable households and expand people-centric assistance programmes that directly benefit those most in need.
