Miri: The DAP Sarawak Committee has come out strongly in support of its Chairman, Chong Chieng Jen, after a High Court decision ordered him to pay RM500,000 in damages and costs to Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.
DAP Sarawak Secretary Alan Ling stressed that Chong, as a State Assemblyman and Member of Parliament, is well known as a courageous and consistent elected representative who champions transparency and accountability in governance.
In this case, Chong was sued by Dr Sim over issues he raised concerning the allocation of COVID-19 food aid funds in 2020.
“Chong’s actions were driven by his commitment to serve the people of Sarawak and to uphold the principles of justice and equality.
“He did not speak out for personal interests, but in the interest of the public,” Ling said in a statement today.
Ling added that DAP Sarawak will continue to support Chong and will assist him in fully utilising all available legal avenues to file an appeal against the court’s decision.
“We believe justice will prevail. We are confident that the truth will be heard and that our Chairman’s dedication to serving the people of Sarawak will be proven,” he said.
Ling further emphasised that DAP Sarawak remains committed to fighting for justice, transparency, and the rights of the people of Sarawak, and will not bow to any form of intimidation.
“We will not succumb to such pressure. We will continue to speak out fearlessly whenever the welfare and interests of the people are at stake,” he stressed.
Meanwhile, DAP Sarawak extended its most profound appreciation and gratitude to all supporters, friends, and parties who have offered prayers and continuous support throughout the six-year defamation trial faced by Chong.
Ling also called on all supporters to continue standing with the party during this critical period.
