Kuching: A call has been made for the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) to account for funds it previously received from Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s AmBank account following recent developments in the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) court proceedings.
According to a statement issued by special assistant to Stampin MP and ADUN for Padungan Chong Chieng Jen, Michael Kong Feng Nian, the courts have now judicially confirmed that funds in Najib’s AmBank account ending **9694 were linked to 1MDB and formed part of a money-laundering scheme.
Kong said it was undisputed and a matter of public record that SUPP had previously received millions of ringgit from the same bank account.
In light of the court’s findings that the monies originated from 1MDB and were tainted proceeds of money laundering, he said SUPP, as a recipient of those funds, could not avoid accountability.
He further noted that internationally, assets and proceeds purchased using funds traced to 1MDB have been seized, forfeited, and returned to the Government of Malaysia.
“These include luxury yachts, jewellery, artworks, and other high-value assets. There is no special exemption for political parties, and SUPP cannot be treated differently.
“Any political party that benefited from money linked to 1MDB has a duty to come clean, be fully transparent, and return those funds. Accountability must apply equally, regardless of political alignment or position,” he said.
