Press Statement By Abdul Aziz:
Last night around 11 pm, I went to the ground at Kpg Sudat to personally check on the flood situation which hits several houses in low land areas. A king tide has caused flooding in several houses and both entrance roads (from Jambatan Sungai Meba and Jalan Stephen Yong) to Kpg Sudat were also blocked by two-feet of floodwaters.
When I arrived, I immediately contacted Civil Defense Force (“APM”) Kuching officer Rahimah to inform her of the current situation so as to alert them from time to time. I was also informed by APM Kuching officer that in the event that the floodwaters did not subside, they have already prepared a few temporary relief centres (“PPS”) to cater to flood victims facing possible floods during this monsoon season.
I’ve also contacted the State Welfare Department (“JKM”) to inform them of the current situation. JKM have prepared necessities for flood victims at all the PPS. The JKM has also allocated some funds to purchase other necessities which included mattresses, pillows, blankets, towels, and baby diapers.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) today issued a warning of bad weather with continuous heavy rains for some areas in Sarawak until Jan 14th. The bad weather warning with continuous heavy rain is forecasted in Kuching, Serian, Samarahan and Sri Aman, while an alert weather warning with heavy rains is issued for Betong, Sarikei, Sibu and Mukah.
