Kuching: Special Assistant to Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii, George Lam, has submitted a formal letter to the Sarawak Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) on 12 October 2026, calling for an investigation into vibrations and night-time construction works linked to the Kuching Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) project near Taman Stutong Indah.
Lam said residents had raised concerns over high-frequency vibrations from piling works and construction activities extending into the night, disrupting their rest and raising questions about their health and safety.
During a site visit last Friday, he personally experienced the prolonged and noticeable vibrations, adding that the construction site was less than five metres from the nearest residential homes.
He said some residents, many of whom were retirees spending considerable time at home, had reported physical discomfort, dizziness and light-headedness following the piling works.
Lam urged DOSH to conduct an on-site investigation using appropriate precision instruments to measure vibration frequency and intensity, determine whether safety limits had been exceeded, and assess potential risks to nearby residents.
He also called for closer monitoring of construction hours, citing meeting minutes dated 29 August, 2025, which stipulated that works should be limited to 7am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday, excluding public holidays.
According to Lam, subsequent night-time and round-the-clock works appeared inconsistent with the agreed arrangements. He urged the relevant authorities to ensure compliance and take appropriate enforcement action where necessary.
He stressed that the complaint was not intended to oppose infrastructure development, but to ensure public health, safety and residents’ quality of life were protected throughout the construction process.
Lam said DAP Sarawak would continue to raise residents’ concerns and call for greater accountability in the implementation of development projects.
